Alan Young, through his YLF practice, specializes in designing and developing entire patent portfolios for well-funded startups and established companies. He has a proven track record creating IP portfolios that have supported multiple acquisitions in the U.S. and elsewhere. In other cases, Alan has focused his efforts on finding both opportunities and potential liabilities in existing patent portfolios and taking the necessary actions to remedy identified deficiencies and strengthen vulnerable patents and portfolios. Current and past clients have sold their companies based on YLF developed IP for hundreds of millions of dollars. Given adequate source materials and client availability, Alan can generate high quality patents under even severe time constraints.
ASSERTION AND IP LITIGATION SUPPORT
YLF is frequently called upon to discreetly carry out a variety of pre-assertion and pre-litigation activities for Fortune 500 companies and other entities. Such pre-assertion and pre-litigation activities have included identifying potentially infringing methods and devices, drafting hundreds of sophisticated claim charts and Evidence of Use (EOU) charts, analyzing large portfolios for acquisition or assertion purposes and drafting numerous validity and infringement opinions.

YLF has worked with Fortune 500 companies, established mid-size concerns and aggressive startups to generate over 1,300 issued patents in the U.S. and many more abroad. Alan's oldest clients have trusted him with their intellectual property for over 20 years. Alan Young, Principal
I was raised in Strasbourg, France and am fluent in French. I returned to the U.S. to my parent's horse farm near Lake Winnipesaukee in NH and graduated from Brewster Academy. Following service in the US Army Infantry, at the United Nations Command Joint Security Area within the DMZ, Korea and with the 101st Airborne Division, I received my BSEE. After college, I worked as an electrical engineer as part of a team designing marine based data acquisition systems. I graduated from the University of New Hampshire School of Law (née Franklin Pierce Law Center) with a J.D. specializing in Intellectual Property. After three years in a traditional law firm in Crystal City VA, I opened my own shop in Portola Valley, CA. I am admitted in CA, VA (associate status) and am registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
What Drives Me
Love of technology and love of language. My background in electrical engineering and ability to explain complex matters in a clear and engaging manner has enabled me to pursue a rewarding career and build a life that I love. My passions include snowboarding, weightlifting, amateur radio (Extra Class license ~ call sign AG6ZE), Morse code, restoring 1920s to 1950s broadcast radios and bringing 1940s and 1950s-era vacuum tube B&W televisions back to life. I have raised three children and lots of pups with my beloved wife of over 30 years.
